The Shared Struggle!

Youth power is India’s biggest asset. Even then, educating and grooming the youth is not our top most priority. The number of underprivileged youth with poor education background is so huge in India. According to the Centre for monitoring IndianEconomy (CMIE), there is currently around 31 million jobless youth in Indi (better fact). Due to the lack of adequate education, proper skills and seeking attitude, the human potential of our country stands under-utilized.

In order to conveniently channelize the energy of the underprivileged youth, equip them with appropriate knowledge and skills and advance towards economic growth, Smile Foundation has come up with an e- learning programme called STeP.

Smile Twin E- learning Programme (STeP) is an initiative of Smile Foundation that aims at creating a pool of young and independent people, from a section of underprivileged youth, through skill enhancement in tandem with market requirements. It is an effort towards bridging the gap between demand and supply of skilled manpower in the fast emerging services and retail sectors of modern India.

This national level programme trains the urban underprivileged youth in English Proficiency, Basic Computer Education and Soft Skills for enhancing their prospects of employment in the fast expanding retail, hospitality and BPO sectors.

Kalpana lost her mother when she was in 10th standard. Owing to a series of uncertain events at home she was forced to drop out of school. But the zeal to study remained and she continued to study on her own while managing the household chores. During a door to door mobilization drive conducted by STeP, Kalpana came across the program and its benefits. She immediately enrolled in the course and began to attend the lectures regularly and in six months’ time she was trained in computer and management skills, language and other soft skills. After the course she got placed in a retail store with a starting salary of Rs 5500. She is earning as an independent woman and also taking care of her sibling’s education.
